March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month!
Colon cancer is preventable, treatable and beatable!
- CRC is the 2nd leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States in men and women combined.
- African-Americans are diagnosed with CRC more often than any other ethnic group.
- People with pre-existing conditions such as type 2 diabetes, obesity have a 27% greater chance of developing CRC.
- CRC can develop without any symptoms.
- CRC is the most preventable cancer. In 90% of the cases, CRC is treatable if screened on time.
- Everyone over the age of 50 should get a CRC screening test called colonoscopy.
HOW TO TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR COLON HEALTH:
- Talk with your family about their medical history – learn the genetic factors.
- Eat healthy: fibers (fruits and vegetables), lean meats (turkey, chicken), whole grains.
- Drink low-fat drinks.
- Drink plenty of water.
- Make a “no-smoking” rule in your home.
- Limit the alcohol.
- Monitor your bathroom habits.
- Walk for 30 mins daily, exercise.
- Maintain a healthy weight.
- Talk to your / a healthcare provider
- Get screened!
